    Description

Fluke 408A Six Kilovolt DC Power Supply
For sale- a Fluke 408A Six Kilovolt DC Power Supply.
This unit is old enough to have vacuum tube circuitry, you can see them glowing internally when the thing is turned on and warms up.
I don’t know that that is a bad thing, it just gives you an idea of the vintage.
For a unit that old it is in surprisingly good physical condition.
Which is a long way from pristine, certainly no museum piece but it should look OK on your test bench once it gets cleaned up a bit.
As noted it does power up and the High Voltage indicator does come on (it was not powered up again for the photos).
If there is a down side to this piece it doesn’t look like you can dial it any lower than 500 volts.
Which is approaching the upper limit of my cheap VOM.
With the unit set on 516VDC I was reading 536.
When I dialed out the single digits it dropped to 530, when I backed out the tens it dropped back to 520.
So consistently about 20 volts over the selected power setting.
Perhaps there is an internal adjustment, perhaps my cheap meter just reads that far over (I just got it not long ago, not sure how accurate it might be).
But as long as it is consistent I would think you could dial in a number and add 20 and be at least in the ballpark.
What I can’t say is what would happen at higher voltages.
I have toasted several VOM’s over the years testing similar power supplies.
Sooner or later you learn your lesson.
When switched from 500 to 1000 the meter (on the unit) reacts accordingly.
On other high voltage PS in the past as I moved up many times I would get an arcing between positive and negative at the output, so without a lead in place that is as far as I intend to go with it.
Please note that it has not been tested with any sort of load attached.
That is the extent of my testing and no warranty is offered.
However, IF you pay the asking price and find it has a problem you cannot live with within 14 days of receipt you may return it.
Returns are ONLY allowed on Buy It Now Purchases.
Accepted Best Offers are strictly an as is sale, no returns allowed.
Return would be for a refund of the purchase price, not including shipping costs.
Just so that we are clear on that, this is an item that has not been thoroughly tested.
As such it may work fine or it may have problems, so any purchase entails a certain degree of risk.
If you Buy It Now your risk is limited to the shipping costs both ways.
If you submit an offer you do so knowing that you cannot return it.
In either case it is up to you to decide whether the risk level is acceptable to you, and if not you need to pass on this particular item.
The unit has a cover over the back panel output, I assume you could switch that to the front output and use the back instead but I didn’t test that theory.
These are not hard to find online, but since I don’t know the other listings to be accurate I won’t paste any of their specs here.
I will say that this thing isn’t nearly heavy enough to be High Voltage and High Current, and the other mentions of it characterize the output in milliamps.

Sold as is, as described, as pictured.
Potential buyers are asked to please make sure you have read the listing carefully, and understand what you are buying.
Ebay’s condition codes for used items, which I am now required to select from, might imply a degree of functionality that my limited time, knowledge, and facilities do not allow me to ascertain.
If the functional condition of the item is known it will be stated as such in the listing.
Unless a warranty is specifically offered returns are not accepted regardless of any implied functionality.
Payment is expected within 7 days of the close of the sale and I need to hear from you within 3 days to confirm the transaction.
Because of the weight and bulk of the item I have chosen to let ebay’s shipping calculator figure out the cost based on your zip code.
