Shiitake Mushroom Plug Spawn. 100 plugs on spiral cut dowels. Spiral cut helps to ensure more valuable mycelium stays in the grooves when hammered in. Used to inoculate freshly cut logs. Inoculated with spawn made with certified organic grains. Free shipping in the USA.
Shiitake grows best on oak logs followed closely by sugar maple and other hardwoods except walnut. Fresh cut logs should be used to prevent competitor fungi.
A bit from 5/16"-11/32 is commonly used including the metric 8.5mm in between. Many suppliers have adapters that fit angle grinders that make the process much faster. Also a collar can be used on the bit (or a simple wrapping of tape) to ensure appropriate hole depth. The holes are then sealed over with wax although some people skip this step.
